The diamond's recorded history begins in India, where stones were gathered from alluvial deposits in riverbeds well over two thousand years ago. For more than a thousand years India was effectively the world's only meaningful source, and the mines of the Golconda region, including the fabled Kollur mine, produced many of the most famous early stones. The names recorded the awe people felt: the Greek adamas, the root of the word diamond, means unconquerable or unbreakable, while Sanskrit texts called the stone vajra, the thunderbolt.
For most of that era no tool could cut a diamond cleanly, so early diamonds were prized for hardness and rarity rather than sparkle. They were worn uncut as talismans, set into religious objects, and believed to grant protection, courage and even invincibility in battle. The brilliance we now take for granted did not arrive until cutters in Europe learned to shape the hardest material on earth, centuries later.
The unconquerable stone
The Greek adamas, the root of the word diamond, means unconquerable, and Sanskrit texts called the stone vajra, the thunderbolt. For most of history the diamond was prized for a hardness nothing else could scratch, not for the sparkle it is known for today.
The diamond rush and the rise of De Beers
Diamond supply shifted to Brazil in the 1700s as India's mines were exhausted, but the modern industry was born in South Africa. In the 1860s a teenager named Erasmus Jacobs picked up a bright pebble along the Orange River; within a decade the Kimberley mine had opened, and between 1871 and 1914 it alone yielded millions of carats. The rush drew prospectors and financiers alike, and in 1888 the British businessman Cecil Rhodes consolidated the fields into De Beers Consolidated Mines, which came to control not only supply but global pricing.
The cultural turn came later. In 1947 the advertising agency N.W. Ayer, through copywriter Frances Gerety, created the De Beers campaign that tied diamonds permanently to romance and fixed the diamond engagement ring in Western tradition; the line was later named the advertising slogan of the century. That single campaign is the reason a diamond engagement ring remains the default symbol of a proposal today.
How the diamond learned to sparkle
A rough diamond is not a sparkling thing; the fire we associate with the stone is entirely the work of the cutter. For centuries that work barely existed. Medieval diamonds were left in their natural octahedral shape or given a simple point cut that followed the crystal. The table cut, which ground one face flat, was the first real advance in the 1400s, followed by the faceted rose cut in the 1600s and the cushion-shaped old mine cut in the 1700s, each adding facets that caught candlelight a little better.

The breakthrough was mathematical. His round brilliant, with its fifty-eight facets, remains the standard by which diamonds are cut today, and the GIA later built its cut-grading scale on the same principles. The sparkle that the 1947 marketers sold so well was, in truth, only a few decades old.
