Gold jewelry turns black because of the silver and copper mixed into gold alloys, not the gold itself. Sweat, chemicals and sulfur can darken those metals, makeup can rub off tiny particles that look black on skin, and worn plating exposes silver underneath. Most causes clean off with soap and water or replating.
Few things are more puzzling than a gold ring leaving a black line on your finger, or a gold chain slowly turning dark. Pure gold does not tarnish, so something else is going on. The cause depends on where the black shows up, and almost every cause has a simple fix.
Why is my gold jewelry turning black?
Gold jewelry turns black because of the other metals mixed into it, not the gold itself. Pure gold does not tarnish, but 14K and 10K gold contain silver and copper, which can react with sweat, chemicals and sulfur in the air. Black marks can also come from makeup rubbing tiny metal particles off the piece, or from plating that has worn through to silver underneath.
The good news is that the cause is usually easy to identify and fix. The first question is where the black is: on your skin, or on the jewelry. Each points to a different cause, and the sections below work through them by situation.

Why does gold leave black marks on my skin?
Makeup and powders. One of the most common causes of black smudges is makeup. Many foundations, powders and sunscreens contain hard mineral particles that act like a very fine abrasive. When a ring or bracelet rubs against skin covered in these products, it wears off microscopic metal particles, which look black against the skin. Taking jewelry off before applying makeup, then cleaning both skin and jewelry, usually solves it.
Sweat and body chemistry. Sweat contains salts and acids, and some people's skin chemistry is more reactive than others. The silver and copper in gold alloys can react with sweat to form dark compounds that rub onto the skin. This is more likely in hot, humid weather, during exercise and with lower karats.
Lotions and residues. Lotion, sunscreen and soap can build up under rings and react with the alloy metals. A ring that leaves a dark band by evening often just needs cleaning, and so does the skin beneath it. The post on why jewelry turns skin green covers the related green marks that copper can leave.
Why is the gold piece itself turning black?
Tarnish in lower karats. The lower the karat, the more silver and copper the alloy contains, and the more likely it is to darken. 10K gold is less than half gold, so in humid conditions or around sulfur it can develop a dark film, especially in crevices. 18K gold, at 75% gold, rarely does. The guide does gold tarnish? explains this in detail.
| Gold type | Gold content | Chance of darkening |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | About 99.9% gold | Very low; too soft for most jewelry |
| 18K | 75% gold | Low |
| 14K | 58.3% gold | Low to moderate in harsh conditions |
| 10K | 41.7% gold | Moderate; more silver and copper in the alloy |
| Gold-plated or vermeil | Thin gold layer over another metal | Higher once the gold layer wears |
Worn plating. If your piece is gold-plated or gold vermeil, the gold is a layer over another metal. Vermeil is gold over sterling silver, so once the gold wears thin, the silver underneath can tarnish black, just as sterling silver tarnishes on its own. Plated base metals can also darken as they are exposed.
Grime in crevices. Chains, textured finishes and settings collect skin oils, soap and dust. Over time that buildup looks gray or black, especially in the links of a chain. This is dirt, not tarnish, and it washes out.
Chemical exposure. Chlorinated pools, hot tubs, sulfur hot springs and household cleaners can discolor gold alloys quickly. Even one session in a sulfur spring can darken a lower-karat piece.
How do you fix gold that has turned black?
For grime and light tarnish: soak the piece in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 15 to 20 minutes, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Then buff with a plain jewelry polishing cloth. The full method is in the guide to cleaning gold jewelry.
For black marks on skin: clean the jewelry as above, wash the skin, and take rings and bracelets off before applying makeup, sunscreen or lotion. If the marks continue only during workouts or hot weather, take the piece off for those times.
For worn plating: cleaning will not restore a worn gold layer. A jeweler can replate the piece, or you can replace it with solid gold. The comparison of gold-filled, gold-plated and gold vermeil explains how long each type of layer tends to last.
For heavy discoloration: a jeweler can steam clean and professionally polish the piece. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and harsh dips, which scratch gold or strip plating.
Check the Stamp First
If a piece marked gold turns black quickly and badly, check the stamp. No karat mark, or marks such as GP or GEP, mean it is plated. The guide to telling if jewelry is real gold covers the tests.
How do you stop gold from turning black?
Put jewelry on last and take it off first. Apply makeup, lotion, sunscreen and perfume, let them dry, then put your jewelry on. Take it off before showering, swimming, cleaning and exercising.
Clean it regularly. A quick soak and brush every week or two for rings and chains you wear daily stops buildup before it darkens. Wipe pieces with a soft cloth after wearing.
Store it dry. Keep gold in a dry, lined box or individual pouches, away from bathrooms and away from rubber bands and wool, which release sulfur.
Choose a higher karat if it keeps happening. If you have reactive skin or live somewhere hot and humid, 14K or 18K gold is less likely to darken than 10K or plated pieces. The comparison of 14K and 18K gold explains the trade-off between purity and durability.
Gold care routine
Jewelry on after makeup and lotion, off before water and workouts, a weekly soak for daily pieces, dry storage, and 14K or 18K for reactive skin.
Does black mean my gold is fake?
Not necessarily. Real 10K and 14K gold can darken because of the silver and copper they contain, and even 18K gold can leave a smudge if makeup is involved. Black discoloration on its own is not proof that a piece is fake.
That said, if a piece turns black quickly, the color rubs off to reveal a different metal, or it has no karat stamp, it is likely plated. A jeweler can test the metal in minutes. The guide how do I know if my jewelry is real gold? walks through home checks and professional tests.
For pieces you plan to wear every day, solid 14K or 18K gold is the most reliable choice. It may need the occasional clean, but it will not wear through or turn black permanently.
"If the metal is gold and it turns your finger black, it's usually from silver in the alloy."

In Short
1Gold turns black because of the silver and copper in the alloy, not the gold itself.
2Makeup, sweat, lotion, chemicals and worn plating are the usual causes, and lower karats darken most.
3Clean with mild soap, take jewelry off for makeup and water, and choose 14K or 18K for reactive skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Does real gold turn black?
Real gold can turn black when it is a lower-karat alloy, because the silver and copper in it react with sweat, chemicals and sulfur. Pure 24K gold does not tarnish.
02
Why does my gold ring leave a black mark on my finger?
A gold ring leaves a black mark on the finger when makeup rubs off tiny metal particles or when sweat reacts with silver and copper in the alloy. Cleaning the ring and removing it before makeup usually stops it.
03
Does 14K gold turn black?
14K gold can darken in harsh conditions because it is 58.3% gold and the rest is alloy metals. It is far less likely to darken than 10K or plated gold, and it cleans easily.
04
How do you clean black off gold jewelry?
Black is cleaned off gold jewelry with a 15 to 20 minute soak in warm water with mild dish soap, a soft toothbrush, a rinse and a lint-free cloth. A plain polishing cloth adds the final shine.
05
Can makeup make gold turn black?
Makeup can make gold look black on skin because hard mineral particles in powders and foundations rub microscopic metal off the jewelry. Put jewelry on after makeup has dried.
06
Is gold jewelry that turns black fake?
Gold jewelry that turns black is not necessarily fake, since real 10K and 14K gold can darken. A missing karat stamp or color that rubs off to another metal suggests plating.
