Wheat Chains

A wheat chain (also called a Spiga chain) is a jewelry chain produced from four strands of twisted oval links woven together in a repeating pattern that resembles the tip of a wheat stalk. The four-strand interlocked construction produces a round, textured chain cross-section with a smooth continuous outer surface, excellent flexibility, and high resistance to kinking. Wheat chains are produced in 14k and 18k gold across yellow, white, and rose gold tones, and in sterling silver.

The wheat chain is called a Spiga chain because spiga is the Italian word for ear of grain or wheat stalk, and the chain's construction pattern visually resembles the tip of a wheat plant. The name originates from Italian jewelry manufacturing where this chain construction was developed and named. Wheat chains and rope chains are both constructed from twisted elements, but their structures differ significantly. A rope chain uses two twisted strands of round links creating a helical, rope-like surface. A wheat chain uses four twisted strands of oval links woven in a tighter, more complex pattern that creates a more defined textured surface. Rope chains are more reflective with a smoother surface; wheat chains have a more matte, woven appearance with more texture at close range.

Wheat chains are available in widths from 1mm at fine delicate formats to 5mm and above at bold statement widths. Wheat chains should be cleaned by running warm soapy water along the chain with a soft brush worked along the length, paying attention to the woven surface where residue accumulates in the link grooves. Rinse completely and dry fully before storage or wear. Gold wheat chains require no anti-tarnish treatment but should be stored in a soft pouch or lined box. Silver wheat chains require periodic polishing to prevent tarnish from settling into the link texture.
